Specimens of Wood Type

This is for any letterpress wood type junkies out there.

From the pages of an old wood type catalog. I can't help but laugh that the company chose words like fruit, ice and blanket to show off the lettering in the catalog and then paired them along side words like drunk, sined (sinned?), mob, and raiders. Perhaps there happen to be a great deal of general stores at the time in need of advertisements to promote pitchforks and stones to angry mobs, or "buy one get one" sales so drunks knew they could purchase a blanket to pass out with after consuming their bottle of whiskey. You never know, a print shop could make an ad for just about anything.

Chasing the Sun

Last August I spent one month visiting friends and backpacking through England and Scotland. In Edinburgh I discovered one of the most amazing places I’d ever seen. This grand city plays host to the epic Fringe Festival, an amalgam of five different arts fests, including music, dance, books, art and comedy. It boasts two massive weeks of laughing, partying, making new friends and artistic discovery. Scotland isn’t known for its sunny days, but I was lucky during my stay to see blue sky 5 out of the 8 days I was there. On this particular afternoon it had been a bit stormy, but when the clouds broke for a brief moment I was ready with my camera to seize the opportunity to capture the beautiful light striking thru the clouds upon the renowned Ross Fountain in front of the Edinburgh Castle.

All Around the Globe

A world away from the globe you had in elementary school, artist Wendy Gold has been skillfully altering vintage globes into new works from her studio in the bay area for the last couple years. Any of her pieces would certainly add a dash of wonderment to a child's room. Make sure to swing by her site to see everything from airplane adventures to Where the Wild Things Are on a world wide scale.

Endless Summer

As the last few weeks of August arrive, we all know it wont be long before it is time for back to school and all the fall weather. But it sure is nice to pretend a lazy summer could last forever.

Chasing the Sun

"Last summer I spent 2 weeks rock climbing and exploring Corsica, France, with two good friends of mine from Switzerland. The rock there is famous and incredibly fun to climb. It is the most beautiful granite I have ever seen and has the most stunning colors ranging from white to orange to a brilliant red. Corsica has a long and proud history and hosts so many wondrous sights and wild animals from wild boars to fleet foxes, though it's people are a bit gruff. I adore Corsica and look forward to visiting again someday. " -Glenn

For more than a while now I have been trying to get a good friend of mine, Glenn Douglass, to share his stunning photography here on this little ol' blog. By now you have probably noticed that round here we are big on eye candy, so his work should fit in nicely. Glenn has been hiking and climbing every mountain he has come across for the past several years. Along the way he has captured spectacular photos from California to New Zealand. So if you like what you see, please let us know with a comment below, and together we can welcome him to his new weekly column, posted every Tuesday, called Chasing the Sun.

To properly introduce Glenn, I have asked him to share ten random things that make him, well... him.

1. I drank my first cup of coffee at the age of thirty.

2. If I have to choose between going to a mountain or a museum, I usually choose the mountain.

3. I don't like pickles.

4. My favorite time of day is sunset, when the sky turns orange and the weight
of things to be done has subsided.

5. I have a degree in Business I don't use.

6. When in Rome my tradition is to take a bottle of my favorite prosecco to the steps of
the Trevi fountain and drink it with as many friends as I can find.

7. Some of my favorite memories as a child were working in the yard with my Dad.

8. My favorite Beatles song is Let It Be

9. My favorite movie is Dead Man by Jim Jarmusch

10. I speak a little bit of Italian, French and Spanish and constantly confuse them all.

Storefront Shrines

This advertising shrine of Klim brand powdered milk next to a pyramid of alarm clocks kinda makes me smile. I can't help but wonder if the owner put a great deal of thought into their window displays based on markup ability, overstocked items or possibly the lack of storage space in the back room? Any which way this is a great snapshot of a main street pharmacy circa 1950.

Sweet Toppers

This darling collection of vintage wedding cake toppers and an assortment of petite wedding cakes is from here. What a wonderful way to have several types of cake at your wedding. I am certainly ready for a slice!

Paper

I ran across the work of Megan Brain this morning on Craft. Her whimsical and intricate use of paper is delightful. No surprise she has created pieces for Yo Gabba Gabba, Coraline and Disney.

Charming

My grandmother saved this charming cookbook in hopes of someday having a little girl to share it with. Since she only had two sons she had to wait another generation to teach someone how to bake... me. Little did she know that instead of giving me a passion for baking she gave me a love of vintage illustration and typography. Oh, how I wish I could find this book now!
